Hello,
I am 15 and hope to start an electricians apprenticeship next year.
Once i have complete the apprenticeship i wish to be a domestic installer.
I know that domestic installers are normally self employed and part P registered.
I wish to be self employed and part p registered and was wondering if you get a part p card or something as I.D. to show that you are an electrician... if not then what I.D would i use when i am working to show that i am an electrician if i am self employed.
Thanks

Hi Chris....welcome to the forums :)

When you register and pass your Part P assessment you will be given a Registration Number by the Scheme Provider which can be used to determine that you are who you say you are.

I think some of the schemes may do an I.D card but I don't think they're compulsory.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong ;)

only Card that you mandatory get a photo on is JIB..... i know Elecsa have started doing volountary Photo ID cards when registered with them..!

I am with Elecsa and you do get a card stating that you are Part P registered, and it has your company name and date of expiry on it. Cant beat all that value for £485.00 eh:rolleyes:.............oh and you get a mouse mat as well. Dread to think how much a photo ID card will cost, but i will find out soon, re assessment on 18/11.

Cheers........Howard

Thanks for all the advice...
Good luck "SirKit Breaker" with with the re-assessment...
How long does the card last for?
Also
What do they do for the assessment?
Thanks

If your doing an apprenticeship why not think about doing commercial and industrial as well. DI is not the be all and end all of the electrcial industry. If you look there is a post on here about how many people are going down the get qualified quick schemes all to be DI. Use your apprenticeship to do more than just that, by getting a proper apprenticeship you can do all sorts and please use it to your adavantage. Many a true saying more strings to your bow the better.

Now I've got the old man advice over with :D As your doing an apprenticeship I would go for the JIB card as this will give you your ECS and therefore be able to work on building sites as an electrician, the schemes can not give you the ECS side of it, though pretty sure NICEIC may think they can.

As part of your assesment to be self certified is you will need PI insuarance, copies of the Reg, OSG, GS 38 and EAWR-1998. You will need to show you have a complaints procedure, not sure if now you need to show you can do a risk assesment as these things change often, perhaps someone else may pull me up on that. Who ever you decide to go with will send you a pack.

As for the assesment itself then you may have to show 2 installations what they call a major and minor. Major could be a CU change a minor a new lighting circuit or ring final circuit. They will inspect your standard of workmanship, they will ask you questions mostly on testing and inspection and the Regs, and will ask you to demonstrate your testing procedures, such as safe isolation, etc.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, but all I can say don't look back in 20 yrs and wished I'd listen to that old F**T about not just doing DI

You got a mouse mat??? You Jammy sod! I've always wanted a mouse mat.. I have got an Elecsa photo ID card though at a cost of £6. The only decent photo I could find was at the alter on my wedding day.. Yes I was smiling! Somehow looks abit wrong on my Elecsa registration card though... Oh well.. I really just wanted to see what the card would look like

ok... Will it take longer to do the others as well as DI?
and will it be a different set of qualifications?
so i would have to do the work placement with a company that does all type of work or would it be more than one placement?
Explain please....
Thanks

You will need slightly different qualifications but I would say the best thing you could do would be to work with a good sparks for a good while. There is no substitute for on the job training to see how thongs should/ shouldn't be done
