Hope this is in the right section!

Had an electrician round to quote me for some new sockets etc. He said my RCB was 16th edition, and suggested that be replaced.

He looked at a ceiling rose, and said because the wires were black and red, they must be over 30 years old, and hinted at a full rewire (the house had an extension built 10 years ago by the council, so some wiring work was done at that time, to standard).

He said without these things, he could still issue me with a certifcate of some kind, but it would only be valid for 2 years.

Ive checked a couple of things on google and wikipedia, and im not sure some this information is entirely accurate!

Was he trying to bump up the quote??

He's talking crap get yourself a decent spark into quote for it
the old colours were still being used up to 2006 I think so if that's 30 years ago I am looking remarkably well for my age

He looked at a ceiling rose, and said because the wires were black and red, they must be over 30 years old, poppy cock,he is either lying to you or he is incompetent and hinted at a full rewire no doubt he would then

He said without these things, he could still issue me with a certifcate of some kind, all electrical work requires certification, large or small works have certification relevant to the size of the work,Also most major jobs also require notification to the council (Plus a large fee) before work commences unless he is a member of a competent person scheme who are permitted to self certify by notifying via the niceic, Napit or Elecsa work in but it would only be valid for 2 years. ( utter nonsense )

Be very careful of who or what you are engaging

Get some other electricians to come and give advise and quote

If you have difficulty getting anyone local, ask on here, myself or someone else from this forum who are not that far from you may be able to assist

Tried to post a pic, but it hasnt come up. THe box is made by Contactum, it says BSEN 60439-3 in the corner. Various switches for upstairs and downstairs lights, stairlift, even smoke alarms. I got the electrician through the rated people website, but he had no ratings!

He is spouting utter tripe. Either he isn't a spark at all, or he's a very dishonest one. The certificate that only lasts two years is a corker, what happens then, does it self-destruct?

And if you have a 16h edition installation, chances are it will be fine for many years to come. The addition of RCDs (if you don't have them) would be beneficial, and if new sockets are added then the spark should insist that at least those are RCD protected.

Get another opinion (or three).

Your better off getting personal recomendation by freinds or family
Here is a link to a government department that will list suitable electricans local to you if you do a search

All the above advice is great, I am in agreement that this guy is an utter chancer by the sounds of it.

Advice for the poster here... there are a lot of people on these "rated" sites that have massive levels of incompetence, I have first hand experience of this. This is for the simple reason that anyone can sign up to these sites, as their competence, credentials, or qualifications are not checked at all. It's a playground for rip off merchants and chancers.

As said, find someone by personal recommendation.

Take all the advise above and get a spark that knows what he is talking about.

Haha, didnt realise that would happen! Its mainly just pics of things Ive sold on Ebay (thank god I took those "other" photos off!)

Send the spark to this thread, see what he says lol.

Probably just after work so lieing out of his rear end
