hi, i have a shop and my neighbour(who also has a shop) had his electrical supply cut off and the meter removed, he has asked me if I would let him have an electrical supply from my shop and he will fit a submeter to measure how much he uses and pay me on that basis. i want to help but only if its all legal and above board. im sure there is plenty of capacity because we each only have a few lights, computer and till and a couple of fridges. is it all legal?

I think you'll find it is probably illegal.Ask yourself why the electricity was cut off and the DNO removed the meter:confused:

the supply was cut off because the previous tennent never paid the bill. i dont see how that is relevant here. i still pay my bills on time and should be able to supply him

This is an interesting querie
Without being aware of the ins and outs of the electricity continuity regs,I would still hazzard a guess that you would be breaching those regs,in fact becoming a distribution network operator,so on that score I would tread carefully, because the implications for yourself may be enormous

Electrical wise you would need to bring his property into your equipotential zone by having adequate earth for your sub main supply and bonding any pipework that exists and making sure the supply can carry the extra load

I have in the past worked on large privately run industrial units where the main supply was exported ,but that was one owner of the whole of the properties and I think would be considered a different situation to yourself

What does he believe he would be gaining by not having a meter installed
Surely the standing charge is not going to cost more than the alterations you would have to carry out
