A lot of RCDs say that they must not be subject to 500V testing, I have not seen any instructions to this effect on modern RCDs though. So I would suspect a good surge may damage an older RCD, it may not cause it to trip however.

lots of cheapo dodgy SPD now coming onto the market so be aware - if unsure ask for certification for product and then check that the certification is worth the paper it's written on (if it states 25yr guarantee then it's probably not legit!) I have started using these recently and have gone with the German make Dehn - very good quality at a reasonable price
