Electrician Career

U

Unreal

Hi,

I am currently involved in the IT industry and fed up being chained to a desk and monitor I want to get out and see the world. I am considering becoming an electrician. Once when I was a boy I managed to relocate a BT NT5 socket from one room to another as I didn't have the money to pay BT and it worked also I repaired a cut telephone wire and felt a sense of achievement by using diagrams. I build and fix pc's for friends and family at times. I am over 25 so I guess its the adult apprenticeship route. Questions I have is follows:-

What would my typical starting salary be being an adult with experience in IT?

Is being an electrician recession proof and cannot be outsourced?

How complex is the training? Is it most theory or practical?

Are the national recognized courses funding by national bodies?

What's it like being an electrician is it worth the hassle? Women seem to think its better than being Obama when the light switches back on.

Thanks.

An adult with experience in IT is the same as a adult with shelf stacking experience, because they have both got FA to do with sparking. Electrician recession proof and cannot be outsourced, was 5 years training now 7 weeks I'll let you make your mind up with that.

7 weeks cant be true? They say there is about a 40,000 shortage especially in the North and a growing industry as construction, new builds increase this all BS or any truth to it?

All BS I'm afraid - training providers tell you that to get you to part with cash for training. I expect they told you you could "potentially earn up to £50,747" as well, making whatever they're charging seem like a sound investment.

don't believe these training companies there is f all left work in this industry. There are loads of time served spark's sitting out. it takes a good 5 years to learn this game and to be competent spark.

I am coming out of my time in a few months so I would love to know where these 40,000 jobs are. The Industry has went to pop. When I was thinking about a sparking apprenticeship I was told that it was a robust industry (well that was before this damn recession). Saying that, there are jobs out there. Its just a case of what contacts you have and who you know.

Watching all these you tube videos they seem to promote that there loads of opportunity maybe just to enroll but unless they are being paid to be interviewed and what is said to promote that website they seem to think there will always be work.

It will cost you at least £3000 to get qualified. And that is based on the current qualifications that are changing as of the end of the month. It is broken down as follows. City and Guild Certificate in Electrotechnology 2330 levels 2 and 3 = £400 per year = £800. 17th Edition regulations = £400. NVQ level 3 = £800. AM2 = £700. Plus your ECS test and public liability insurance. This is the route for self employed mates/ improvers on £10 an hour. Good luck if you get a start on £10 an hour at the moment mind you. plus you will be learning in the evening, two nights a week for 3 hours, or a day off work. And when the qualifications change to the 2357 at the end of the month meaning that you you won't even be accepted on to the course unless you are working in the industry..... It remains to be seen whether you can self finance as self employed, or if the only training opportunities will be through apprenticeships whereby you will be on £6 an hour if you're lucky, and lucky to get one. You really have to WANT IT. But don't be tempted by these intensive training courses that cost thousands too. Sparking is all about experience. My advice would be to wait and see how the proposed changes at the end of the month pan out. And the economy. Best of luck.
