Hi All I have recently decided to change career and get myself qualified as an electrician, I have been searching online for courses that are available and have found a few but one that has caught my eye is with a company called Trade Qualified Limited, they are a City and Guilds approved centre. The course I am looking at includes the C & G 2391, 2382, 2377, Domestic Installer Certificate Full scope, Essential Electrics CITB, Appointed Persons First Aid and also the CSCS Site Safety Card. All together the course is 6k in the course you spend 4 1 week periods in their training centre doing the practical stuff and sitting exams plus one additional day for the C&G 2391 although they say you should wait six months after working as an electrician before sitting the 2391. I am sorry this post has dragged on a bit but I was hoping I could get some feedback as to whether this course looks good and if anyone else has heard of the company running it, I would be very grateful for feedback on this

Sounds similar, different company. I'd not want to be telling anyone if to go for it or not, I will say it was the only route for me personally, but you won't get as much one on one as you would going to college one day a week, it's hard work studying at home and you have to be very disciplined with yourself. It's far too easy to keep putting it off to another day. Before you sign up for anything ask for a period to think it over, and be sure to read everything front to back. Good luck! :)

Ive been in the electrical industry since leaving school 26 years ago, Ive worked on all types of installations, Ive got a JIB approved ticket and all the appropriate qualifications. I was a QS for a niciec company for 7 years (full scope) and have worked through a couple down turns in the economy.

I started looking for work with agencies and companies just before Christmas ( I am a bit choosy what I want to do ) anyway to cut a long story short one company phoned me last week and asked if I would go for an interview to rewire domestic properties. Apparently 80 + people went for this one job and I was selected for the last 10.

The company was based in Essex and the work was in South London, anyway I declined the offer of an interview. I myself live just outside North of London by junction 26 of the M25.

Things out there are not that good, there will always be work, because there always as been. Parting with 6k with no-one to train or work with is a big risk if you can not afford it. There's to many people trying to get into all the trades and there ain't enough work to go round imo.

I'm not to bothered at the moment because I know I will get a couple of months work eventually, then take the summer off, but for others who need regular work, it ain't good, especially when they don't have proper qualifications or experience.

Thank you for the replies, unfortunately the home study route is the only way to go for me as I have to get the qualifications around current commitments kids work etc. I find it easy to discipline myself to study and get my head down so that shouldn't be a problem. I am hoping to get the qualifications the spend a couple of years working for a firm before setting up on my own, do you think this is a realistic goal?

British Gas along with other big national companies are targeting the domestic game (households) with home care packages. This includes everything: Electrics, Gas, Plumbing, Sewage pipes the full works.

The public like security and the sales rep get in there and sell to them and people buy it, starting from what? ÂŁ15 a month.

People might laugh at me, but this is all linked up to Government. British Gas own Gas Safe, over 500,000 registered installers, how many are going to end up working for British Gas?

The game plan as been put in motion and within 5 years there won't be hardly anything left for part pee, no different to all those who got conned and bought the HIPS pack courses for ÂŁ1000,s only to see the whole lot scapped.

Don't want to put you off mate, just what I believe is happening.

never heard so much crap...!!

No Body Owns Gas Safe...! its ran by Capita Group PLC on behalf of the HSE

british gas are owned by CENTRICA PLC and have nothing to do with Gas Safe or Capita Group!

it would ask serious questions if a major competitor to gas safe engineers was awarded a contract to manage there registrations!!!

it woul dbe like the government give Mr Electric the Contract to maintain Part P registrations !!! no one would get a Membership and all work would be gobbled up by the ever expensive tripe that is Mr Shambles!

Can only reiterate what all the others have said. With so many qualified people availalbe all those doing the 6k course are really just wasting time and money.

Unfortuantely the good days of proper training in a recognised apprenticeship is something that us old sparks still dream about. There are a few still availalbe but these are rarities.

The governments in the UK for some unknown reason seems to want to belittle my trade. They hold Gas fitters in a much higher regard, when to be honest a gas fitter is a plumber with a U-gauge. Because UK industry as been decimated over the years there are no longer places where you can learn a trade and so goverments have given lip service to these get qualified quick schemes which not only rob the industry of competant electricians it robs you and the customer.

I can't understand why LV electrical work is held in such contempt by governments. it's not like plastering or tiling where you can go on a course and be proficent. It is a dangerous and often lethal discipline and by not training people correctly it will lead to serious consequences. I said before i'm glad in a way I'm coming to an end in this industry and I have grave concerns in how it will be carried on when the competant electrcians finally leave it.

I admire you for wanting to do something different, but before you part with 6k think hard and fast if that money would not be put to better use for you.

Alright, maybe not on paper, but they do make individuals surrender their gas safe registration if they want to work direct.

Some people in the industry can not understand and make comments "they can not understand why British Gas as gas safe in their pocket" more truth and honestly is spoken by the people who actually do some productive work in the industry than those who regulate it.

Next the Government will be saying they are not owned "run" by the banks :D The big players do what they like and say what they like and the sheeple believe it.

Wonder why Napit pulled out of the race for Corgi?

I don't know, with their high profile and high spending advertising campaigns in the electrical industry, they were obviously perfect!

I like a good conspiracy theory but more often than not, plain facts and statistics dictate policy.

I'll agree that I can see a future dominance of British Gas in the domestic electrical area though and that's probably not a good thing.
