Hi everyone
I am thinking of getting a pair of these as I have a job that has been started but I have to terminate a 35mm swa into a ryfield board that is already feeding 4 units so I am unable to turn the supply off. The cable termination is ok as there is room in the Trunking above but the actual terminals seem quite close so would rater have the protection of the gauntlets just to be on the safe side.
Also where would be the best place to buy from as I'd rather not do eBay and get a dodgy pair thanks in advance.

You're treading on thin ice here! There is a hell of a lot more to live working than just buying a pair of marigolds!

Have you got documented risk assessments explaining what control measures are in place to reduce the obvious hazards that exist from live working? Have you got a suitable insurance policy in place that covers you for such work? Have you received any training in live working? Should something go wrong would a court agree that in line with the EAWRs this live working was absolutely necessary?

I would re-think your position before going anywhere near this job!

Alternatively, carry out the work after safely isolating. If you need permission to do so, then get it.

Don't know about Electrician's Gauntlets mate, but your post begs the question, why can't you isolate the board as you don't mention this in your post. Surely you can arrange with your client to have some down time, a 35mm2 SWA is not a small cable to go terminating with live parts nearby, or has the client been told that you can do it live?

Personally I would err on the safe option, it's your life on the line, and a pair of gloves aren't going to be much good if you get a flashover, anyone gets hurt, if an accident happens and it could be proved that it was completely unnecessary for you to work live, then look out the HSE will have your guts for garters. Just my opinion.

What would be the effects of an unplanned outage if you make a mistake, compared with arranging a planned outage to isolate the board and work dead, in accordance with EAWR?

totally agree.just because this ryefield board feeds other units its not going to be deemed that it was absolutely necessary to work live. im sure all that would be required is a little planning to provide safe isolation to carry out the termination/testing.

Do you know anyone that works for UKPN? I get 1000v rated gloves off a mate of mine as they have to replace them every 6 months so there still in good nick. Just blow them up with air and hold them inflated before you use them to check for any holes.

Someone should tell UKPN about that test method, it would save them thousands a year replacing gloves.

So, if you are going to do it live, tell me how you are going to perform the correct sequence of tests before you energise it? Of are you not planning on testing it....

You would be a fool to go anywhere near it, it's not clever to think you can work on a live installation, it's just stupid.
