I'm currently in a job (with training) to be an electrical technician on the railways (see my 'intro' thread) but I'd like some more practical experience (at lot of it is driving, testing and inspecting) on domestic supply stuff.

Forgive my ignorance, but do you require any formal qualifications to be an electrician's mate?

If not, would it be unreasonable to ring around a few local sparkys and offer my services (for free) perhaps on weekend or something?

I'm due to take them (courtesy of my company) as part of my apprenticeship over the coming 18 months. We do 2 week courses every 3 months to attain them (amongst a couple of others).

A starter for ten could be someone with an adult trainee jib card mate. This is what the jib doled out to me when i applied for a card mate. I've got over 10 yrs experience, 2330, 17th ed and 2391. So there you go, look for that mate. However to be honest I would be wary of someone who applied to you stating my experience and quals - unless they had the references to back it up. My gaffer was suspicious of me when I applied for my job. His reasoning being, why did it take so long to get my paperwork. So i got taken on on a trial basis. I don't know whether that option is open to you, but it proved my case.

Appreciate your reply mate but you've lost me to be honest!! I haven't got the main qualifications yet (I have an NVQ L2, a BTEC L2, NWRSA Supervisor and a load of non-electrical GCSEs/A levels/NVQs) but not the standard elec ones. I will have in 18 months though.

My question really was would I look a silly cnut offering my 'assistance' in return for experience to a local sparky?

No, but try to make it with someone who you trust, otherwise you could get mugged off.

Ok cheers mate. I'm generally not of a disposition to get mugged off but I'll see what happens!

I was lucky enough to know a sparky that has taken me on one day a week whilst I stay in my current job.
My friend however, wasn't so fortunate and he emailed a load of local sparkys explaining that he just wanted to learn and that he would like to 'tag along' whenever he could to fit in with his day job. He got three replies. I would advise that maybe?
