Electricians tone tester

Hi all,

I was shown something last night by one of my mates, something called a tone tester...?

One of these I think:

Just wondered if anyone has used one? He reconed he could ID one cable out of a whole loom straight away by using this. I had a quick play with it and it appeared really good!

Just wondered if anyone has ever used one, and what the verdict are. Also any perticular makes and models?

generally used for telephone systems to identify pairs . you send a tone down the pair and pick it up the other end with a non contact sensor. when you think you'ver got the correct pair, short them out and the tone stops. useful on cat5 as well.

they're great for identifying cables quickly among a bunch

worth having for the time you need it


that's mainly what i use it for ID'ing a cable quickly-like you say

We use them on patch panels and racks when they havent bothered to ID cables

I use something similar for identifying what MCB a socket outlet is on without having to knock off the power T190CB Circuit Breaker Identifier - TopTronic Instruments, Test Equipment, Multi Meters, Automotive Testers, Circuit Breaker Finders, and much more

You plug the tone generator into the socket and then find the MCB with the other thingamabob. Works well and very handy for places with computers etc where they don't want to interrupt power.

Also a thing called a fuse finder martindale or fluke i think very handy bit of kit

I used something similar when I was on the Aeroplanes, but that was many moons ago.

I've purchased these units for projects I've worked on. The unit's i purchased were expensive and performed well in all the situations they were put to use in. Yet i keep hearing that these gizmo's don't perform too well on the forums?? All i can think of is that they have bought and used the wrong unit for the job they want them to do. Probably like most tools in this world these days, you get what you pay for!!!

great for detecting a break in a pair in a multi core cable,but you do have to separate the cables as you can get cross talk to another cable in a loom,still wouldnt be without mine tho,great tool to have
