I think the idea of generating electricity from the tides is an excellent idea and should have been done eons ago!

It clearly depends upon whether you are effectively damming up a river. That is one of the major problems of hydro-electric schemes and control of water for irrigation potable water.

Yup, but hopefully they've thought of that!

Doing nothing isn't an option so any progress to "make" energy cleanly has to be progress and applauded.

there will be about 5 miles of wall built into Swansea bay,the stone coming from Cornwall

There are then plans afoot now to extend the scheme to Cardiff, Newport, and Colwyn bay

I am as much for this means of generation as I am against the useless "waste of time and money"solar nonsense that has washed the taxpayer pounds down the drain

I think you mean all us who can't afford to get PV installed, subsidising the rich who can, with extras on all our electric bills.
Don't even go where landowners are laughing all the way to the bank and back with their windmills!

Something similar is already in operation in strangford lough in ireland.

There was a tidal "turbine" in Strangford Lough, NI, featured on one of James May's programmes a few years ago, very interesting.
I live on Hayling island, and due to local topography, every few hours we have water rushing in or out on either side of the island either from Langstone or Chichester Harbours. A huge amount of natural energy, about 20sq km ( so I've been told) x 3m deep in and out about twice a day.
Another benefit of man made lagoons is a reduction in coastal movement, and a potential for water sports; windsurfing, waterskiing etc. could be a boost for struggling coastal economies.

Using the incredible power of the moon,has been a constant thought since childhood.

I remember many doodles,where i tried to design a way of overcoming the slack water period between tides,so generation remained,without a lull... me pal used to joke,asking if i had thought up a million pound idea....not yet.

About twenty years ago,i even found the perfect place to build such a scheme,Hayle,near St.Ives in Cornwall...

Oh well,maybe next year Rodney...:icon12:
