Electricity meters. Whos job...

Is it to install the meters for electricity use. Job I'm starting wants a meter on the installation. Only problem is he doesn't want board changing and its supplying communial stairs aswell as the accomodation. So as you are aware the students will be paying for the communial hallways electric. Thats not normally how it works is it?

Plus the space inwhich exsisting board is, has absolutely no room at all and the main incomer can not be transported to anywhere near. Real dilema here.

Depends whether the landlord wants DNO supplied meters or not. He may just want one DNO meter at the head and landlord meters for the flats/communal areas, which he in turn may bill to the tennants (and split share of the communal areas) or make them coin/token/card operated, there's a few options here.

Yes but whos job is it to supply that meter? contractor has asked me to do it. I'm not upto date with installing them and also as said the communial and accomodation are on the same DB so any meter would be takeing an overall reading of both accomodation and communial hallway.

Contractor can supply, as I said in previous post, have fitted din rail mounted, with CT's. As for the shared supply, might be sharing the cost between tenants.

Take the supply for the communal area through a meter on the out going of the CU. You can get a recalibrated meter from most wholesalers.

I fitted a meter just after I moved in to my flat a few years ago, all the communal and security lighting was going through my meter. Each flat had to then chip in to my bill.

Depends on the contract with the client/contractor, it's no different to any other accessory, so by default yours.

Depends what the client wants as regards the DB/communal area situation. Either have a feed from the CU to the communal areas or supply a separate DB (metered/unmetered) for the commual areas. There's no right/wrong answer here.

Further to this...can I then have the meter between MCB and First light on communial lighting?

@topquark-there is absolutely no room for another DB to be added. Space already has 2 DB's the other is supplying another part of the building - nothing to do with contractor.

Sorry, I'm confused now. You asked two questions. The first was who should supply the meter. By that I thought you were asking who was providing the equipment (avoiding the use of the word supply). The second was how to supply the communal area. You've ruled out the DB option so that leaves Tony's (my second) option.

I'll but out as you seem to be making progress.

Sorry - who should supply you have answered...thanks

My problem now is seperating student accomodation and communial areas via a meter. Surely the owner will want the students area metered and not the communial....I.e they pay by card etc.

I need to know how to do this when there is no room to seperate communial lighting and student accomodation via seperate CU's
