hi there i want to run electricity to garden shed but not too sure what route to take, it will be used for a light which is probably all. i was given about 20 metres of 3 core armour cable, but is there any way i could wire that to a double socket (inside shed) and plug (in house) then bury it. it would be turned off when not in use if i could

or do i need fuse boxes blah blah

thanks for any help alex

you can't fit a plug on SWA. what you could do is fit a Fused Connection Unit adjacent to a convenient socket, T/E to an adaptable box on the outside , then gland SWA to a metalclad socket in the garage. fit a metalclad FCU at 5A next to this for the light. bear in mind, you will be limited to 13A. make sure swa ARMOUR IS EARTHED. and ensure cpc continuity throughout. the socket you use to come off in the house, must be RCD protected, or you will have to fit a RCD FCU.

Will there be a Zs issue on this if its a long run though tele?

not really an issue, as if it's plugged in , it's not a part of the fixed wiring. the RCD will take care of fault current anyway.

Personally, ...I don't think you are skilled enough to terminate SWA cable, or to connect into an existing circuit within your house. This is a perfect example of when employing an electrician will pay real dividends for you.

He will assess your installation and design a suitable installation to suit your needs. You have the SWA cable, and if is of an appropriate size will save you in cable costs. Also, if you are willing to dig the cable trench this will save you more money on the overall costs.

Do please think very seriously about employing an electrician as i said, or you will end up with a potentially unsafe installation!!
