Hello everyone!!

I have a strange problem I have not come across before. I have a double socket (with switches) which powers my dishwasher and washing machine. When the dishwasher or washing machine has finished its cycle, I press the on/off button on the appliance. Then when i press the switch on the socket, to turn off the plug sockets, the whole electrical system trips at the main switch which is protected by a 30mA RCD. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? :)

Have you tried plugging something else into the double socket and see if it still does it.Worth a try.Possible faulty appliance.

Thanks for your replies. Yes Mac I have tried other appliances and I still have the same problem. Mr Sparks, forgot to say, I have changed the socket to see if it is that but no change. The wires seem ok also.

In weird RCD situations like this, I tend to do a ramp test on the RCD, to see if it's actually waiting for a 30mA fault before it trips. I find most 30mA RCD's will trip at around 25mA. You'd need a tester with ramp function to do this though.

Another thing I'd try is fitting a socket with a double pole switch, as lots of them are single pole only (They only turn off the live instead of live and neutral).

If all else fails....... Just leave it turned on and trust the appliances off button. I haven't turned mine off in 3 years :D

Thanks Jbec-John for the info. I haven't got a tester with a ramp function on yet but can borrow one from someone. In the meantime though I will try what you suggested that is changing to a double pole switch. I will be doing this tomorrow so I will let you you know how I get on. Cheers!
