Have an electric motor running a small pump, it is wired through a 13a standard plug with rcd. Need to fit an emergenct stop switch on the actual machine.

Got a switch with 1 no connection and 1 nc connection with earth through the mounting hole. Can someone explain how i need to wire this up???

Many thanks

Why would you put a pump on a plug, some irriot will unplug it!!

Are you an electrician? If you are why are you asking such a question, if your not, pick up a phone book and call one as you clearly do not know what your doing regardless...putting in an E-Stop has to be the easiest thing in the world FFS!!

The switch should be RED and look like a mushroom or a large flat head. Anything else is not suitable for emergency switching.

NC is the standard switch position for normal operation. Hit the switch head and the circuit goes out (NO), release the switch head and the contacts return to NC.
Now you have just re-energized the circuit unless you use something along the lines of a contactor to disengage the circuit.
You might need to do some extra homework before you wire one of these up !

Had a so called qualified electrician look at this but he was unsure as its isolating a motor He said as a motor runs on 2 phases isolating isolating one wire the motor would still try to run, so i bought a twin pole stop switch, but he isnt 100% on its wiring...

Are you really serious, either your taking the **** or the Guy was not a qualified spark from even the most backward nation. If it is running on a standard plug how the **** would it be dual phase, you only have a LIVE and a NEUTRAL as it is SINGLE PHASE...either that or you have rewritten the laws of physics!!

Oh dear oh dear!!!!!! You need an electrical engineer rather than an electrician ....modern sparkies can just about wire a house from college. Firstly we lack so much info, secondly regardless of what Outspoken implies wiring an E-stop isn't a simple as it sounds many regulations have to be adhered to that fall outside the BS 7671 and that's why you can't use a standard electrician unless they are experienced in this field. The E-Stop will need to drop out the power to the motor and when the E-Stop button is returned to normal state the motor should not re-energise - a separate deliberate reset action is necessary usually a reset button. As your possibly exporting control wiring a safe control voltage may be needed to be used and this may need alterations to the existing set-up. If it applies a risk assessment should be done to get a safety category which will define the kind of E-stop system. If the motor is simply direct power off the plug top the a little contactor control box with e-stop and reset option is all that may be needed. Its clear the electrician you had was clearly out of his depth with your request and lucky he didn't do the job from what you say was his reply :bucktooth: PS .... I do hope Tony misses this thread as he'll have a field day lol....

just cut the cable. a separate action of applying choc block and tape is required to restart the motor, so it's safe. cable cutters shown below, take your pick::

Please do tell me your extracting the urine too... :)

This is gonna be good................popcorn ordered and sitting comfortably.
Don't mind me................

Carry on guys ..............I'll open with auxiliary contact to prevent inadvertent starting after power loss:)

If you think telling an OP with no electrical experience that wiring an E-stop is a simple task then your advice is not only misleading but could be dangerous... we know the pump is powered via a 13amp plug and nothing more.... we don't know the set up whether it has a little mounted control panel or anything else, you seemed to just assume by my reckoning, now if you think im taking the urine then please give detailed explanation as to how you would do it with info given by OP please....

DW, firstly I did not give him any info on how to do it, I simply pointed out that this is a simple thing to do IF he was a qualified spark...which clearly he is not, thus i would then agree with your comment that clearly it is not simple..

However to answer the comments of the OP...double pole key locking E-Stop so that when it is operated it breaks the supply on both poles but requires a key to re-energise. Perfectly compliant for such a small device and does not need fancy and potentially confusing (for the poster) control wiring.

It could be a slave switch where you would have a L in and a common wire out to a master switch.
