hi,

i got asked a question about emergency lights today and didnt no the answer,

where do you install maintained and non maintained emergency exit lights?

i no that you install them at the exits or if you can not see the exit they got to show the route to the exit but how do you no weather to put a maintained or non maintained light up.

its just something iv never been clear about.
thanks
wayne

The way I understand it you should use maintained at exits which are accessible to members of the public or people who are unfamiliar with the layout of the building, although looking at other installations it seems to be a bit of a free-for-all.
There should also be an emergency light above the outside of the final exit.

There's a specific document on emergency lighting which tells you things like minimum lux levels, what sort of fittings to use and where to place them, but i haven't bought it.

There are too many different reasons to use maintained or non maintained to list here so i will give you a couple.

Escape route lighting in public buildings with dimmed lighting eg cinemas, night clubs etc should be maintained.

The final exit door on a public building with normal lighting to be maintained but the escape route may be non maintained.

For more info you really need to look at BS 5266.

emergency exit lights?
do you think i need add one at my house ,
wait ,emergency exit lights belong to LED lights ? ok i will add one !
as it named emergency exit lights ,you should let it tell pople in dark the way to exit by the simplest way ! such as light up the xeit and point out the way to exit !

i no where to put them, what i wanted to know is, what do you put up, a maintained or non maintained. do you put maintained at the exits and non maintained on the routes to the exit or is it vise verser?
