hello all,

I have been asked to inspect and test a maintained emergency lighting system at a restaurant. I turned the power off and one of the two exit lamps on the front doors switched off when I isolated the power at the main board.. following the 3 emergency lighting lamps on the same side... The other side is fine.

Would anyone know how to rectify this issue? Ive got to get it done asap. Im in need of some guidance on this issue.

I have no log books, plans or anything to follow. I cant even get up there to see how its wired. I have never dealt with emergency lighting before.

any help or ANYTHING of use would be great.

urs truly
Nick

batteries goosed? battery link not connected inside fitting? if thet're non-maintained, they should not be lit when the power to them is on.

Are they maintained or non maintained.

Had exactly the same connumdrum last week, and in this case they were all non maintained, and thus should only come on and stay on for 2-3 hours in the event of a power failure.

Good luck

hmmmmm... one side of the restaurant is lit when the power is isolated. the other side isnt. Ill get up there n have a look at the battery and the link tomorrow morning.

Would the battery be situated closer to the supply side or to near the lamp?
(shows how much i know :/

Is it just basically a matter of replacing the battery? then doing a manual test to see if the lamps stay on.

actually now that i think about it LoL the exit signs are maintained and the other lamps are non maintained. but theres two non maintained lamps that dont work and ive replaced one lamp. so would i have to replace the battery then simply do a manual retest?

Sorry for all of the confusion. Its been a long day.

Emergency lighting systems wiring in themselves are basically very straightforward
The test and inspection, not so straightforward, unless you are familiar with BS 5266-1

Try and find the information to read up on the requirements before proceeding

All the best

yeah i printed it off as a guide for when im in there next. ive read most of it already.

anyways, as for the certificates that i issue. its just the 3 pages of the Periodic Inspection and Testing certificate for Verification of an existing installation isnt it?

generally easier to replace a fitting than trying to get replacement batteries. as for certificate, you need the correct em. lighting cert. to BS5266
