Hi guys, just a quick one. In the process of a renovation to a old school house which is being converted into assisted living, combination of apartments which have kitchen, bedroom, ensuite, some just have bedroom an ensuite and use of the main kitchen, the upstairs hasnt been converted and is block off, so just ground floor, we have added maintained led bulkheads in exit corridors and any room with no natural light however is there any need under current regulations to install illuminated signage? Any opinions appreciated, thanks Steve

in an industrial building you don't have to install illuminated signage, however you will have to install signs and in the event of a black out, the em bulkheads will have light up the signs, if you do install exit boxes they should be permanently illuminated, however i'm not sure if regulations are different for residential properties

Hi afraid its is it's not that professional. Lol.
Cant seem to find a definite answer online, anybody have a easy design guide on emergency lighting
many regards Steve

Surely if your designing & installing EM lighting you have a copy of "BS 5266-1:2011 Emergency lighting – Part 1: Code of practice for the emergency escape lighting of premises" for reference !

Would have expected it to to have been done at design stage and approved on risk assessment. Its not a guessing game, and following 5266 in the design stage is crucial. With out drawing of the building can only give your basic rule of thumb, EM lighting c/w wth signage on every exit maintained. EM lighting in every area which has a change or direction, level Signage should be visable from any area in the building, to show a safe exit route.

Is this a smoke packet on the fly design as it sounds like the build is already well on it's way to completion

Would have thought this would have been covered as part of a fire risk assessment and the local authority HMO standards and designed into the build with the fire alarm and any other safety requirements
