I'm finding it hard to get a definitive answer from BS 5266.
Is Emergency lighting still required in basic single room building such as say a 50M² workshop where 6 people are employed?

I'd say yes... Can't back up with a reg but just think t makes sence

Document B specifies that all open areas larger than 60m^2 must be illuminated in the event of the failure of the normal lighting supply.

At 50m^2 I'd probably still install exit lighting as an absolute minimum, have you carried out a fire risk assessment?

I'd agree about the Exit light but then BS5266 seems to suggest that if Emergncy ligthing is required that you must illuminate exit routes including the external area immediate to the door.

Fire risk is minimal, is there a standardised risk assessment form for this?

the BS should be read as a MINIMUM requirement along with the detailed fire risk assesment Iv been coming across a lot of buildings with NO emlighting outside exits and others who go way over the top IMO with their provisions

Cheers mate, thanks for the link.
I had a read though it all and I'm still struggling to get a definitive answer.
Personally I'd tend to fit an Exit light above the door and leave it at that.
5266 seems to suggest though that if emergncty lighting is required then escape routes including the area external to the main door should be installed.

The factors I would take into account considering that the Bs is a bit vague
On the positive side,it is a small area
The persons are familiar with the layout
Do they work only in the daytime
Is there natural light via windows
Are they using equipment that would become dangerous if the light is suddenly gone
Is there any local authority rules that require it

An exit light even in work premises where e/l may not be required is a good idea and cost wise,it shouldn't break the hearts of even the tightest of employers :)

I thought that the external part of a premises only required an emergency light if there was insufficient external light from say a street or estate light and the escapee was running out into darkness

My argument to this would be Worst Case Powercut affecting full area no Borrowed light and BTW you SHOULDNT be @Running out@ in an emergency situation you should walk quickley to the nearest available exit
