Hi Guys,

Just posting to see if any of you guys know if there is a regulation or any form of guidance for the replacement of batteries in emergency light fittings? Is it just change them out when they dont work or is it better to change them over after a set period say 3 or 5 years? Ive tried contacting YUASA and CHLORIDE but have not had any replies back from them so far. The batteries are ni-cd types and range from 2 cell to 4 cell. Thanks in advance:D

Cheers for the quick response mate, the batteries are marked up MARCH 2008 but i think thats the factory fitting date rather than the install date. Im looking for a regulation or recommendation so i can go back to my manager and maybe order all the replacement batteries and fit them rather than order them in dribs and drabs and the job will just drag on.

The efficiency of the batteries deteriates over time you will probably find the batteries will not last the full test period or the illumination level will be below spec at the end of the test

Nicads will normally last about 3 years and sealed lead acids about 5 years

If you want a gadget for testing then you could try this

Luminaire Battery Tester - test in minutes

Three years from March 2008 then.( us not reg's )

B.S. 5266, but I dont think you will find anything regarding batt changes other than correct chargiing after 3 hour soak test
