Dont know if any of you guys are into this but been posed a question from a colleague.
If asked to complete a periodic insp. of a very large Em light system and there are no previous inspection reports or documentation showing agreed deviations etc what course of action is needed.
Would a full inspection of the system with verification of design and installation be the required course of action???? And then production of relevant drawings etc?????
This would be my advice....any other offers?????

The only documentation required for an EL system is a log book for recording all inspections, tests, faults, modifications and extensions. So lack of this would call for a full endurance test, and assuming its a self contained system be prepared for a lot of failures.

The extent of any PIR should be agreed with the client, so its up to him if he wants to pay. Why do you think the design verification and drawings are required.

Basically because there are no drawings. There must also be some deviations or he would not of mentioned it to me. Why are there deviations? would be my question. The certificate asks that plans are available. If there are no plans surely a full Em light Completion cert would be neede and npt a Periodical????? Not really my area so thanks for input.

Seems a bit suspicious, he's told you there are deviations but wants you to verify the system. I've tested and inspected 100's of EL systems and never seen one with deviations, and if it had deviations it would not comply with BS 5266, and I would refuse to verify the system.

The plans should be with the O&M's for the building, are there any O&M's.

Incidentally if you do a search of the forum going back 2 weeks you should find a lot of useful EL info.

Not my job buddy. Just been asked advice. The building in question is very high profile and also a place of public entertainment. There are no previous test certs available??? The previous contractors appear to have been working a bit of a flanker. There are deviations but all agreed with the original designers unfortunately though the documentation highlighting these and the reasons for deviations are not available. Think my colleague want to cover ---!!

Well in that case it does seem your idea of full verification etc is the only sensible way forward.

And if he can't cover hi ---, tell him to start running backwards.

a log book is required here if there isnt one start one we do monthly function tests on all emergency lighting and keep the log book up to date and every 12 months we do a 3 hour test on the emergencys suggest it to your gaffer
