We're just having all the emergency lights replaced/updated at work, there are going to be well over 100 when finished. Does each luminaire have to be marked with a unique number (label etc.) so it can be "ticked off" a list when carrying out monthly etc. tests?. Just wondered if it's a statutary requirement as they have not marked any so far.
 
I thought they did have to be identified . We always do and create a log book for testing and maintenance so each light can be identified by an individual number . Maybe we just go a bit over the top?
 
Not a requirement, but is always done to enable log books to be filled out, and faulty units identified. If there are over hundred will worth doing, as you can image telling the poor spark to change the emergency light in the corridor, by the stairs next to the mens toilets. A lot easier to tell him number 32 emergency light requires replacement.
 
No requirement, but as everyone says, a good practice.

There is, however, a requirement to show schematically where each fitting is, and preferably where it's fed from (i.e db way number) - We also mark any db to show that the circuit is also feeding emergency lighting. That's saved countless hours for us and others.

We would always uniquely identify fitting by ID number, and provide a log book indicating ID, type, rating, location, and test results too.
 
I like to label everything, you just have to look at the way the fire people label all the break Glasses and sounder/smoke heads, a lot of the new ones have a circular area specifically designed/intended for a sticker and a roll of stickers come with them...

A Desktop Dymo printer with the round labels would be ideal, there's Red ones and Clear ones available as well as the white ones.....clear ones could be stuck on the perspex and Red ones on the side/end


such as EML43-DB10-L2

Emergency Light number 43 - Distribution Board 10 fed from L2 (as an example)

A Barcode sticker for maintenance, with the right PDA/Phone setup would also enable the sparky to beep it into a phone/mini tablet/pda and call up on screen info such as:

last maintenance done date/week/year

Age of fitting (and therefore the internal Battery for use by date/warranty i.e 3 years etc)

Type of Lamp/Bulb fitted

Rating of Lamp

Type of Gear Tray.

If the Fitting has had it's twice yearly full 3 hour discharge.

Where the key-switch is located

The Building manager's phone number...


etc..

And any replacement of the fitting or Lamp that needs done, but can't be done on that day, for example because of the need to order new tubes/Lamps/fittings could be entered onto a reminder in the calendar, and an email sent from the phone/tablet to get the office to order in the parts...
 
Grantr37 - It was only because the factory failed a Fire Service inspection that the boss decided to pay for the lighting, I think he'd have a heart attack paying for the ideal system you suggest! :D
