Hi all

Been asked by my employer to visit a site and test the emergency lighting. I know for a fact theres some issues ( some not working at all ) .

In regards to siting the lights...the building was built in 2008 and has an emergency light cert on site, but an external contractor has stated they need more and the office manager has gone nuts.... Any views ?

Also whats the reg on test switches ? ...as some points dont have test switches so have to have the MCB switched off in order to test. .....i defo would have put them in but ...
  1. should switches now be fitted !
  2. Would it be ok to fit them next to DB's and just break the supply in order to test ?
  3. Is there any good sites i can visit to gain a better understanding ?

Thanks in advance

You sound very much out of your depth, and no daubt been put there by your company.
It is alway best to have test switches, either next to the db, or with in the test area, cleary marked. Otherwise on mcb switching, you will put the building in darkness. The BS5266 guides are you best call, try googling for guides. There is alot more to just switching off the EM lights, in a periodic test. There is reference to the original installation, duration periods, EM id numbering, Location sheets. I hope your company is going to supply you with these, on the first test.

Oh defo mate...but as you said put there by my boss.

Although im just going to use it as a learning curve. :)

Op no offense meant but there is a lot more to EM testing, it is not just a case of kill the power and see if they work.
You are going to be signing a report to say that the system is still suitable from the original design and therefore peoples safety becomes your problem.
Personally if you are still learning about the subject then I would suggest shadowing someone who is qualified in this field.
