Hi All went to carry out and emergecy light pir today what a mess, not a test swich in the whole building, had to trawl through a 1960 ish board and kill circuits in turn to bring on the emer,s.Anyway I have to change nearly all the lamps so I was thinking can I drill out the case of the new lamps and fit a in line test switch without contraveining any IP requirement none are exterior

Can you not fit a grid key switch adjacent the fitting or break into the circuit at one of the fittings and fit a switch to supply a group of fittings

If there are alot of emergancy lights on circuit i would recomend installing a grid switcch below or near consumer unit, would be alot easier for testing as all switches in same location.

Cheers some good ideas there will give it some thought and yes I will be changing complete lamp assemblies throughout as what is there is scrap

Depending on age and type of the fittings you may need to change the whole fitting if the fittings are a combined emergency/normal fitting as with the older T12 lamp (old 1.5" lamp) the newer emergency control gear does not work with them.

It’s getting to the point where full LED replacement is cheaper than spending time on testing and possibly replacing parts.

You would have thought they'd have a switch to flick on and off to engage an override. Not on each PIR but an actual light switch
