I am trying to find more information on emergency power systems in public buildings. Is there a definitive source of information out there that I am missing? A Guide, code of practice, regulations, etc.

how long does it need to run for? chances are a generator will be the way to go.

I would recommend a specialist to get involved because when you start adding changeover switches and multiple supplies there are a lot of regulations.

ups are good but they dont last very long and are expensive and need a lot of space

Depends how seamless you require it to be. Is it a case of the protected areas must run at all times so that if the power does drop the ups takes over until the generator comes in which may be 2 mins later to take the load off the ups which are more of a short term solution. Or if it doesn't really matter if it drops for 2 mins and then the genny takes over. It'll depend on what the public building does.
