Id like some advice on a tricky matter i find myself I have been with my current employer as an electrical improver for just over 2 years. I am nearly finished out my time and plan to apply for the vacant electrician role currently available within my workplace. Great. However, over the last 2 weeks 2 managers have asked me if I'd consider applying for a higher position (electrical technician) role that is currently available.

I was brutally honest to them both and said I was shocked that they have spoken about me applying for this role, mainly because of my lack of experience. They have both assured me that isn't really a problem as full support, guidance and training would be available. It seems they see something in me they like. They have also said further education would be part of the deal. It sounds good. However I have 2 big concerns, well 3 actually.....

First, I don't want to jump in too deep and do myself more harm than good. Yes I'm a quick learner and apply myself well but a technicians role is a big ask.

Secondly, it's going to more office based than i would like. I want to gain more practical experience and I won't get that in this role.

Thirdly, I'm concerned about upsetting the electrician's around me that I have become friends with. They have been really helpful and supportive with me and I feel they may see this as a role I don't deserve and maybe become bitter towards me. It may sound silly and trivial but it's a concern.

Any words of advice? Am I over thinking this?

Truthfully, what would you like to do most?
Some people can't stand an office job. I don't mind it.
If you go for the technical position then, if they are your friends, they should be happy for you.

I think you’d be better as a Technician after serving time as an Electrician.
However, who’s to say the offer will be made again if you refuse it now?
As for your colleagues, perhaps you should discuss it with them?
Most will probably think you’re mad for not jumping at the offer.

I have loved learning through my apprenticeship and furthering my knowledge. Above all id like that to continue. I'd like to become a knowledgeable engineer.

However, I do like to get involved physically. There will be some element of getting involved but the role is mainly desk based.

That is my concern. Will I kick myself in years to come if I don't go for it.

I have thought about talking to them about it but I'm not sure it will go down well. Mind you, not saying anything and then just coming in one day as a technician will be worst I believe.

I don’t know how approachable the people who’ve offered you the post of Technician are?
It might be an idea to discuss your concerns with them, find out whether they’ll be willing to wait?
Then again, it might be that while you’re learning, they’ll be expecting you to do more physical stuff anyway.

That is true. Maybe I could express I still want to be hands on to a certain level
