The room is 5m x 5m roughly, would 9 50 watt downlighters be plenty?

As were following each other round the posts to day ill add my bit lol , i totally agree inefficiant lighting those down lighters , having said that if you have a good budget and i mean good the Halers LED down lights blow the back side off the 50 watter have a wider spread too and they are only 7.9 watt so loading issues is not realy a problem

I have to thank you old mate for putting me onto these, a friend of mine in the UK is a sparks and he was doing a job last week and asked if I knew of anything better than a downlighter, I sent your link to him and he told me yesterday he got one and checked it and the customer is well pleased, and wants to replace about 15 others he had.

So where do I send you cut mate ;)

I think downlighters only really have use as 'mood lighting', to be fair 35w halogens look really nice in them, and I always think the LEDs are much more of a dissipated light, much less directional. So LEDs will fill a room with light better than the 'down-light beams' of standard GU10s, but to me completely negate the reason for putting downlighters in in the first place - they take the sharpness out of everything.

Really nice, bright and efficient are LEDs (though I sometimes find them too harsh for living spaces), and of course cool running which is always a bonus, but you may as well put them in one of those twenty quid fittings from B&Q. However, to answer the original question, 9 3w LED fitted spots will light a 5 by 5 room easy peasy.

The Size stated for Cables is given in - mm2 - & this Measurement is the Cross Sectional Area ( C.S.A. ) of the Wire inside . The Larger that Area . the Higher the Current it can Carry . if a Cable is Used which is the Small for the Amount of Current Passing through . it becomes Dangerous . This results in the Wire Overheating & Causing a Serious Safety Risk . Yeah

Hmm... Relevancy?

CSA is relevant to all installations. Amberleaf (stig) has given a little bit of advice for the "younger members" and its a good reminder for everyone. My dad gave my some advice once that I still stick to "learn from other peoples mistakes so you don't make them yourself". Any advice from any member is welcome and this my just help someone that is starting out.

if you had 9 50w downlighters on a dimmer, you may be heading for problems. Dont dimmers have to be derated by 50% when used with halogen fittings. Also, if you are putting these into a new build (extension) or refurbishment, you will have to check what the building regs say
