Hi all,

I am French and have french electrotechnical qualification at level 2 as well as 7 years experience as automatic door engineer. I live in uk now and would like to know whether I could work as electrician if I get 17th edition and UK NARIC certify the qualifications.

Is that enough to work as electrician?

Thanks

As such you do not need any qualifications to work in the UK as an electrician, all need is to be competant.

If you are trying to find work as an employed electrician then yes the 17th is a vital qualification to have, and the NARIC certification, You may also need to get the 2391-10 Inspection and Testing qualification as most employers ask for this now.

If you decide to go self employed then in commercial/industrial you need absolutely nothing to tender for contracts just a good price. If you go domestic then you will most likely want to go with a self certification scheme to sign off your work. As above you can contact NICEIC. ELECSA NAPIT and they will guide you.

Thanks for the advice malcomsanford. I was also thinking about doing the 2391-10 but some people told me it is extremely hard, however, I am not discouraged at all. I will definitely do the 17th edition, apply to NARIC and looking to do 2391.

I am also looking to get registered with JIB, what do you think? it that worthwhile?

2391 Isn't as difficult as people tend to make out. It does require ground work to pass the exam, but the people that tend to struggle lack experiance in testing.

To register with JIB, there is a set requirement for qualifications, and no doubt you'll have to contact them to see how they will grade you.
