We have a transmitter(slg 720) installed in a zone 1. it has a hazardous area rating of Exd[ia] it also has a 4-20ma*output. We want to change this signal into enraf bpm so we are installing a converter in a switchroom which is a safe area, this is also rated Exd [ia].my question is does the cable between the two have to be an intrinsically safe cable?

Thanks

If your circuit is in fact Intrinsically safe i.e. the energy Is limited below a level sufficient enough to cause ignition at the (Flashpoint) then you should follow the guidelines laid out in IEC60079-14 which willrecommend the use of blue sheathed cable, blue terminals etc. Functionalitywise a cable is a cable.

I must admit It seems strange to have ExD ia rated kitconsidering Ex’d if intended to contain explosion within the device however,Exia should not permit any substantial spark anyway.
