Hi all, Considering mounting my T.V on the wall in my bedroom and as I'm decorating I thought I might as well put a few more sockets in instead of having extension leads on the floor and wires hanging down the wall.

My question is this. I opened up the socket that is there and what I thought should have been an outlet from the ring was actually a spur from downstairs. (dont ask). So anyway if I replace this spur with a FCU backed with a 13A fuse will it be safe to run 2 spurs from this, one at 450 and one at 1200.

is it spurred off the downstairs ring? anyway if you're replacing it with 1 FCU at 13A and having more sockets (as many as you like) off it you'll have 2990w so that'll run your tv and xbox.

well that would be the normal way to do it. If you had more FCUs wouldn't you have to have one FCU protecting the chain of spurs if it was a ring?

Some wire a ring over both floors....the advantage being that if there is a problem you dont lose all the sockets in an area.....Nothing wrong with that as long as the CU is labelled appropriately.

The ring the existing spur is on is downstairs so to extend it id have too run another leg which means chasing the wall downstairs so not really. I know that would be best, but if this is safe and easier its a better option i reckon.

I'm assuming in this case that the ringmain cabling feeding the downstairs sockets don't come down the wall from above? Usually the downstairs socket wiring is fed through the ceiling (1st floor floor void) and drop down to each point so i would break the ring (cut a cable) and extend the cabling using choc boxes and crimps. If this isn't the case then the FCU method is perfectly acceptable and you're unlikely to overload the FCU unless you plan to plug in a brace of 2kW panel heaters! ;)

Haha. Nah not a fan of heaters. Can't guarantee my missus won't though. Swear she had the heating in the other day.The house is quite weird really. All the wires down stairs (or at least the ones i re mounted flush) came up from the floor.

I can atleast sympathise with that one! Went to see the missus one day and found her near enough cuddled up to a bloody fan heater complaining she was cold. Worst thing is she seems produces about the same amount of heat as a fan heater when i share a bed with her. It's like sleeping with a sodding rad beside you and she wanders why i shove her away and keep a good distance between us when i want to sleep! :evil2:
