hi everyone,
got my 2391 on thursday getting a little nervous now anyway,
I want to ask when asked to explain how to do a IR test on a existing circuit
how do you word the safe isolation part do you have to explain the whole procedure as time is short or would it be ok for the following
. Seek permission to isolate the supply, warn people of the test
. locate, safely isolate the supply for the circuit, lock off, label, CBs off
. remove lamps ,disconnect voltage sensitive electronic equipment or linked out to prevent damage
. select a Insulation resistance ohmeter
. confirm calibration, condition and leads to gs38, batteries ok and functioning
. Set to Mohm scale at 500v.d.c.
. at the db test insulation resistance between Line + neutral, operate two way switches, record result
. then test between lives ,operate two way switches, record result
. Min bs 7671 value 1.0Mohm but if lower than 2.0Mohm further investigate as may be a latent defect
. replace lamps and reconnect any electronic equipment
. reinstate supply

or should i go into more detail for the safe isolation part
any help gratefully appreciated for the testing between lives and then live to earth should i put
between line to neutral operate two ways further test record value
then line and earth operate two ways further test &
then neutral to earth record lowest value from these
sorry but i am not sure as i have exam suucess and only explains for a new circuit
I also have Cristopher Kitcher practical guide to inspection and testing and his version different again as follows
. Ensure safety whilst test is being carried out
. Isolate circuit to be tested using safe isolation procedure
. remove all lamps
. if removal of lamps is difficult or flourescent / transformers are on the circuit open the switches controlling them
.Isolate or bypass all electronic equipment and equipment tha tmay be damaged or give false readings
. Use an insulation resistance tester set on 500vdc
. ensure Instrument accurate and operate the istrument with the leads together and then apart to ensure correct operation
. test circuit between live conductors
. Operate two way any two way switches controlling points where lamps have been removed
. join live conductors together and test between them and earth
. operate all two way switches
. the insulation resistance should be above 2.0Mohm if it is less , then further ivestigation must be carried out as ther may be a latent defect may exist
. it says a insulation resistance of 0.5Mohm is acceptable in some cases this is wrong unless selv
Replace all lamps and remove any shorting links used
.leave circuit safe and operational

any advice would be a big help thanks

Write out the safe isolation procedure, that is what I'll be doing unless: If the scenario relates entirely to a new installation then include at the start of your answer that as the system will not have been energised safe isolation isn't required. Don't forget to include warning signs, barriers etc. in both cases.

Nerves haven't got to me yet but I'm not looking forward to Thursday. Good luck.

cheers guys,
I have been revising over and over since february be glad to get it done then practical to do next tuesday
I have exam success,Gn3, on-site guide, bs7671, scaddons inspection and test, cristopher kitchens inspection and testing, nic guide to domestic periodics, nic inspection &testing & certification, course notes, sample papers etc etc and not one of them tells you correct way for all tests i have gone through 2 A4 pads .tutor says use diagrams as well as bullet points but still didnt tell us exactly what to put ????? its like getting blood out of a stone, how this exam is classed as a level 3 i have no idea a lot more to it than any of others i done
cheers to you and all who have been helping with the many questions i had
Good luck to you guys

Also have this on Thursday believe you quote GN3 verssion as this is what the examiner is looking for.Test between live conductors.Test between LINE and NEUTRAL to earth.

so for second part its between LINE and NEUTRAL to EARTH
and i dont say between line and earth then neutral and earth or between lives and earth
it would be ok if you could see the test procedures wrote down somewhere and getting answers from tutor at college is hard work i have got more answers from this forum
looks like i will be writing them out again be glad when its done been revising nearly every day since beginning of feb hope it was worth it or will be even more money for resit which i dont really have
I have spent nearly ÂŁ5000 on courses and books etc testers and other bits and ot earned a bean yet.
I know why some people are just out there doing things not by the book
Good luck no doubt i will have more questions before thursday

My head has burst months ago:eek:

hi guys still having probs with how to write tests with safe isolation procedure if you include everything then takes forever to write

can someone show me best way for example ive got

Seek permission to isolate supply, warn people

Select GS 38 voltage indicator, prove working on known supply

safely isolate supply,Lock off, Label, circuit breakers on ,Erect Barriers, Post warning notices

Check for dead Between N-L, E-L, E-N all zero volts

reprove tester on known supply

All lamps removed, voltage sensitive electronic equipment Linked bout or removed

Select a insulation resistance ohmmeter

Confirm calibration etc etc

and not even to test procedure i feel this is far to long can any one please show me best way
and how to word it and what to include
