wannabesparky

ive been asked to fit some extra sockets in a kitchen but the owner doesnt want any walls spoiling if at all possible,
he wants 3 additional sockets adding to the kitchen ring, one to be under a work top for the washer to plug into,
i told him as that plug would not be accessible once the washer was plugged in and pushed back he would have to have a fused spur to it so he can isolate it in the event of anything happening.
He wants the fused spur putting putting just inside the cupboard next to it.
so my question is:

can a fused spur be put inside a cupboard next to where the washer is going?

as the cupboards are fixed to the walls dont they become part of the fabrication of the building?

Also:

if i was to extend the ring from one of the sockets can i crimp one of the cables inside the socket to extend it?

sensible answers please as i am still learning. Thank you.

hi wannabe, as i understand there is no prob putting an isolater in a cupboard as long as its accessible!! although i personally prefer them on the wall. If ur planning on breaking into ring and making a connection in back of box remember that any connection must be FIXED so crimps wouldn't be acceptable hope this helps:D

hi mate, thanks for the reply but what exactly do you mean by fixed?

i mean that any connection u make has to be fixed- to the back of box for example, it may be easier to use 30a connector block screwed to the back of box, if the box is 35mm this should workok
Would this also apply to extending cables. A customer of mine had a soundproof partition installed over an existing wall and the sockets were no longer able to be re connected as the cables were too short. We extended them using crimps and it passed inspection.
Did I get lucky or is it ok if extending?

i thought crimping was 'THE' approved method of extending cables not connector blocks. i would agree with markyspark on connectors in the back of box though as the 'joint' is still accessible as its behind the socket.

Crimps are abosolutely perfect if they're done properly, you need a good crimper and when you've crimped pull each wire apart and if they stay togeter you're sorted, they can be put in a backbox and also be buried in the wall as its classed as a permenant connection, bit of heatshrink would'nt go a miss either. Another method is wago boxes, they're a great bit of kit;)
