What's everyone do in regards to finding you are cutting into the ring circuit and not a spur from the ring circuit if that makes sense. I know it's quite straight forward if you are at a socket and can visually see the cables and use the r1+r2/4 method but I mean if you have floorboards up and you can see cables everywhere, how do you know you are extending the ring and not extending a spur which obviously is quite dangerous.

You do have to trace out what you can see until you are certain that you have correctly identified the target cable and circuit configuration. It might be necessary to open one or two points to confirm. I would normally use a tone injector and tracer to single-out one cable in a bunch if it's impossible to trace visually. That is not unique to breaking into a ring, there are many situations where you have to de-spaghettize the existing work before making progress.

Non-compliant and not satisfactory, I grant you. But to put it in perspective, not usually dangerous.

Thank you for your reply. That is sort of what i do now. I was just wondering if there was an easier way. It's pain cutting into 8x2 chipboard flooring and moving furniture to get to where you need to and on a couple of times recently I have found junction box after junction box where the ring is continued but then spurred off to a socket at each junction box.
