Extending sky cable...

What's the best type of cable to use to minimize signal loss? It's not gonna be too long a run, maybe about 10 m

Assuming you mean satellite cable ... something like CT100, it's better not to join it if you can (particularly if this is between lnb/receiver).

if its a fancy setup pointing at a middle eastern sat you need the best coax.

if its a sky mini dish, rg6 will be fine

Use WF100, use F plugs and an F barrel joiner to join the two cables.
If the joint is outside wrap in self-amalgamating tape.

Yep, that's the best approach mate ... depends on a whole host of factors, primarily where in the run length the join is (and making sure you get a good connection and shield around the join so it does get interference).
