Hello All, I would be grateful for any advice offered.
I am currently waiting for my Napit assessment and acceptance for membership.

A friend has just extended his house, adding a two level extension to include a lounge and extra bedroom.
I would like some advice on how best to wire the extension.
He currently has a CU with 3 free ways but no RCD protection. He wishes to have socket outlets and lighting.

After a brief view of his wiring TN-S. No bonding to gas, bonding to Water well above required 600mm from stop cock.

I would myself fit a new CU and bring everything up to date. He however has been advised by anothre electrician that the wiring only needs extending to the "additional building".

He may not be willing to pay for the additional work.

My inexpearience makes me unsre of what I should do, as I may have my fingers burnt and end up opening a can of worms and ending up well out of pocket should I take on the project as my first job after being assessed.

Please advise... anybody...please

Use 2 of the ways with RCBO's for new circuits for sockets & lights.

Earthing and bonding must be upgraded to BS 7671 (2008)

No need to fit new cu. New wiring only needs to comply to 17th either by extending old circuits or by new circuits as above.

He may not be willing to pay for the additional work.

Hope this helps.

Though I agree with Sintra, I would still advise them towards the CU change, and depending on the existing CU, it might not work out much more for the change than the alterations.

Sometimes I do 2 prices (1 with minimun work required, and 1 with full CU change).

What is existing CU?

your new circuits will need rcd protection so dependant on what type of board is existing would decide whether to replace of not.

rcbo may be an option??

no work should be undertaken until all bonding and earthing is present and correct ;)

also if you think someone may not want to pay for the work done or that needs doing move on to the next job and save the aggro

you could route new circuits through stand alone rcd if current board wont accomdate rcbos or split tails to a smaller rcd c/u for new circuits but new c/u is prob the best option as costing either way will be about same

Thankyou all for your replies...sorry been late to respond just got back off my jollies.

I think I will go for the new C/U and hope I dont have to deal with too many hidden problems as the guys wife is very house proud and won't appreciate me ripping any floors up or ripping any wallpaper:p

Haven't heard from Napit yet...was expecting something through the post for an assessment date...Its been 3 weeks now and after paying £40 extra for fast track a bit disappointed.

Will give em a call.
