Hi all, just after some advice please. Got an external garage that I want sparking, (couple of strip lights, and sockets), which is approximately 15 meters away from the consumer unit. Just wondering if anybody could recommend how the cable should be fed to the garage.
It will have to come out from the electric cupboard, through the porch, around the front and side of the house, until it reaches the garage. Just wondering if it would be better to bury the cable, or to run it along the top of the fencing that runs close to the garage.
I have got a qualified spark, but he did not seem too bothered when I asked him what best practice would be. Will I need a RCB or board for the garage.
Many thanks

1- Either use a catenary wire from the house to the garage
2- bury the cable but make sure mechanically protected, either in tube or in wire in SWA
3- or conduit around the fence into the garage

if your house db hasnt got RCD protection you will need a small rcd consumer unit to supply the garage.

if your house DB has rcd protection you can just use a spare mcb to supply the garage and go straight into your 1st socket
or straight into a small consumer unit with a main switch and mcb for the socket and one for the lights.

hope this helps

Many thanks for the reply, think running conduit along the bottom the house and then along the fence will be the easiest option. Will I still need armoured cable if its going to be enclosed in the conduit. The consumer unit does have RCD protection, so I can just purchase a switched garage consumer unit.
I am sorry for my limited knowledge, just not 100% on the spark, as I have got a feeling he will botch it, if I dont give him some direction.
Will ask what cable hi is planning on using. When I last spoke to him, I recall him stating 10mm twin an earth armoured cable, and 2.5mm for the sockets and 1.5mm for the lighting.
The main feed for the garage will be approximately 10 - 12 meters, and then its only an average size garage so thinking of three strip lights and two 2g sockets, with one having RCD protection for the lawn mower etc.
Many thanks

If you have to tell an electrician what to do. Do yourself the biggest favour and use someone else who knows about safety and the job you need doing. If he cant get that right what else is he going to do that could be dangerous.

okay, if its in conduit it isnt necessary to use armoured cable.
im doing exact same job at member of familys house
length of run from board to garage is approx 20m and using catenary wire and 6mm t+e to supply it.
