Working on a remote building which requires a fire alarm fitting a beacon externally to raise alarm if building is unoccupied the position of the beacon will be on a gable in clear view of as many windows of the neighbouring building as possible and in clear view from the car park but aesthetically it would look better if it was inline with the alarm bell box height would be 3m above the 2.1m in regs but surely that only counts internally when building is occupied ??

The height is a minimum of 2.1 and is intended that the visual alarm is not obscured for instance by and open door blocking a beacon at say 1800mm. 17.2f of BS5839:1 2013 States:

"Visual alarms should be securely fixed in accordance with the mountingposition (ceiling or wall) and orientation specified by the manufacturer. Themounting height should not be less than 2.1 m. "

As above.....internal sounds, yes reg applies, but I cannot find a reg for external sounders or VDA ruling.
I would only advise mounting in a place which is visable and out of reach to vandals.

There is not a reg which applies solely to external sounder strobes, the height given is not specific to internal or external it is merely in relation to visual alarms so by virtue applies to either or.

Also be aware of 16.2.1 h) 1) (In BS5839-1 2013)

  1. any external re alarm sounders [see 16.2.1f)] in Category L and P systemsshould silence automatically after 30 min, unless the premises arecontinuously occupied so enabling manual silencing by occupants. Aftersilencing, the sounders might (or might not) restart if, before the system isreset, a further alarm condition occurs;

Looking at the reg you quoted it is worded so that it would suggest it is for internal sounders and VAD's and you are clutching at straws to suggest it applies to both internal and external
