Hi All,

I am working in a joiners shop and there is a large extraction system which serves all the machines.

The problem is the extraction system start/stop button is over one side of the workshop and most of the machines are on the other.

The joiner asked whethre there is such a thing as a remote control stop start button to save him the walki across the workshop everytime he needs to use a machine?

can you wire the stop start as a 2 way circuit and add another stop start controller? install one that can be controlled by remote handset?

or will he have to keep exercising?lol

B
efore altering or adapting the system.please read this thread that deals with start stop control questions

I was one who gave a reply without too much thought and was rightly pulled up on the proposal by Kamikaze because of safety procedure problems
netblindpaul gives warning about doing such modifications to control equipment, siteing various BS that has to be followed before altering these systems

They will no doubt answer your question more competently than I when they are online

mgnelec09,
Joineries are my stomping ground, there are a raft of regs.
What you propose is easily possible, but I doubt that the client whomever they are will want to pick up the bill to meet the requirements of statute law and HSE guidance to achieve your goals.

Is it a stop start station or a DOL starter ?
what is the control voltage on the stop start buttons ?
Is it easier to move the existing buttons (DOL ) rather than add extra buttons?
There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding industrial control systems and a lot of B******T about various BS numbers
Stop start local and stop start remote is bread and butter for most industrial electricians it is the safety of the machine operators that is important if more than one stop start is employed . 17th edition is very sparce on industrial controls For those who want to know more check out PUWER regs there is a major difference between stop start controls and emergency control circuits.
If it is a totally enclosed extraction system fully guarded with no risk of injury if the system is started locally or remote then additional stop start should be no problem.
Woodworking machinery typically has blades cutters etc that pose a serious risk if operated from more than one station.

mgn,
You can add a set of buttons to the starter you have, however, as platty says you must consider the statute law, PUWER98 probably the best place to start.
In the event of a prosecution then HSE would refer to their ACoP which is a quasi legal document, in which it is stated that electrical controls should follow the guidance within BS EN 60204-1.
So as long as you do it correctly you can have start & stop buttons for the extract at every machine.
You must however, in this case have a means of local isolation at the motor in the event of maintenance on the extract motor/filter unit say bag changing or filter cleans/changes etc. depending on the design of the filter unit.
All machinery must have an emergency switching device that complies with PUWER98, and, this forms part of the safety related part of the control system, which has other requirements.
However, depending on the levels of hazard & risk involved, these may be very simple.

To extend from the existing starter to a remote P/B station is fairly simple so long as the provisos are met. IE local isolation for the dust unit and the exported control voltage. I prefer 110V AC for control, where as others go for 24V DC, it’s horses for courses, it’s up to you. Using a 3 core SWA you could daisy chain P/B stations to each machine.

On a site of 6² miles it’s amazing where 110V can vanish to. We wouldn’t contemplate anything less!
But that said, with me it’s personal preference and it’s what I was brought up with. (OK dragged up with)!
