hi im wondering if you can help me. i have an extractor fan fitted in the bathroom and this comes on with the light then after about 5 mins of the light switched off it switches off.
Now yest my fan stopped working.
i got a replacement and have tried to fit it and it wont work. the previous fan had a brown and a grey wire connected. The new fan has a L N L1
on it. the cable i have has brown.grey and the black wire has been clipped back from the previous install. how should i wire this up. i have no idea where the cable behind the extracter fan goes as its a fairly old house. would it connect to the shower isolating switch and how to i wire up the fan. thanks

You need to use a multi-meter to find out which is permanent live, switch live and which is neutral, if you are unsure how to do this then you shouldnt be attempting this, get a qualified person in who can also asess if the installation is safe as its in a room classed as a special location where regulations are very keen for your safety.

What you need to do mate is establish what exactly you have got, the L is a permanent feed as to let your fan overun for a pre set period, N is Neutral, and LS is switch wire which comes from existing light , now possibly the way we wire ours is L= Brown N = grey, sleeved with blue sleeving and Black = LS with brown sleeving on it , try to establish whats what.

the previous fan that was in there only used the brown and grey as on this fan there was only a small chock block using live and neutral. tha black wire had been taped back out of the way. Ive tried putting brown into L and grey into neutral then taking a feed from the live over to the L1 dead as a door nail. Im presuming that im going to have to use the black cable thats been taped back. is this likely to be the L1 feed as it was redundant on the last fan?

ive also got a multimeter but unsure how to go about testing this circuit to find the switch live.

managed to check the wires. bad news is there is no live feed anymore on any of them? i thought the previous extractor fan was broken it seems that there is a prob with the cable somewhere. light switch working which is strange i now need to try and find where this cable goins into the lighting circuit. perhaps in the loft somewhere. how would this cable been joined to the circuit in the first place and whats likely to have happened?

this could also be low voltage, is there a tripple pole isolater anywhere and a transformer, if so make sure isolter is turned on and check there is power into the tranny and out of it.

theorigonal fan that wasnt working as an EMMA EMF4LV says on a sticker low voltage12volt model and ive just checked the fan i was trying to put in its a marley ndx100t looked at specs and it says 230v is this my problem lol do i need to get a low voltage fan. no transformer must be in loft somewhere if there was one. and no isolator

Seems to me you are determined to do this yourself. Buying a 230v fan to replace a 12v one would indicate its time to call a qualified person who does this stuff for a living and can probably solve the problem in 30 mins rather than you having to go back and forth to the shops buying different fans, having to search on the internet for help wiring it, and possibly doing it wrong putting yourself and others in danger. I have watched casualty on tv but wouldnt attempt to remove someones kidney.

All veeeery scary. The first message refers to a suggestion that this fan could be connected to the shower isolator. Lucky he didn't try to prove the new 12v fan from this source.

BS 7671 should be a legal requirement.
