Hi
i have installed a replacement extractor fan in my bathroom. It is a timed Humidity fan. The wiring from the fan requires a Live, Sw Live and Neutral.

I was going to link it to my light fitting but this doesn't have a Neutral/Earth wire ( whole upstairs lighting is due for renewal). So can i connect my extractor fan Neutral off of my New shower Earth ?

Sam,

Do you possess any electrical installation qualifications? There are a number of things wrong with what I see here; this installation does not comply with the wiring regulations. You might be better off in the DIY section of the forum.

seems more like a can of worms has been opened here. popcorn time.

This ones clearly a wind up.
Unfortunately not.

I'd like to try and do this myself.
I now understand i need 3 core and earth but my ceiling rose which i was going to come off of has no earth/neutral.

If i connect the Perm live from the fan to the light perm live, and the sw live from the fan to the sw live in the rose, where do i connect the neutral from the fan too ?

connect it to an earth rod or a cast iron soil pipe. :49:

Your ceiling rose must have a neutral, it may not have an earth, without a neutral the lamp would not light, so I suggest you contact an electrician immediately before you cause any damage if attempting this yourself.

Sam The guys are right what you're doing is dangerous and I don't think it would be wise to give you any further advice on this.
you could always post up your location and maybe one of the members will be close enough to be able to sort it out for you, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Before you get any help please understand you cannot DIY this kind of work, its is not for the DIY and strict regulations come into play in a bathroom:-

-This fan has to be a measured distance/height from any bath or shower can you confirm you have complied with zoning regulations for this fan rated at 230v.
-The fan will need more than likely fusing down and wil be stated in the installation instructions.
-A point of isolation (fan switch or spur point) will be needed too.

The questions you ask would lead me to believe you are totally unaware of the regulations surrounding such and install, or the basic theory behind circuits....

It is thus my recommendation you use a competent qualified Electrician to either guide you and ensure the work is safe and to regulations or get them to do the job for you, you life and that of your family is worth far more than your attempt to save a few quid, had you shown a little basic understanding then my reply may have offered helping advice.

ok thanks. i followed the basic instructions that came with the fan. There was no mention of 3 core and earth needed.
Its wiring instructions were basic but only showed the 3 point terminal in the fan so i wrongly assumed it needed Twin and earth.

I will contact a sparks as i want it done properly and my confusion with the light feed only containing Brown and Blue is obviously wrong.

Thanks everyone. Your obviously pro's for a reason.

sam, if you post your location, a member may be close to you. sort it out.

as mentioned by Westward a link is the way forward, nothing wrong with that and the pull cord will then be the on off switch.
