I am buliding a porch on my house and i'm going to make half of it into a drying room, so i want an extractor fan with a humidistat so when wet stuff in there drys and creates humidity inside the humid air is expelled via the fan.
as it's a drying room heat loss is an issue, so when the fan isn't needed it wants to be as sealed up as possible, and i know from experiance that one anti backdraft shutter and a venitian blind style vent flap is not going to do a good job an a windy day and it will lose alot of heat, sooooooooo i've heard you can buy fans with electronically controlled louvre vents that are normally closed and then open when the fan is signalled to run, this seems like an ideal solution as they wouldn't flap and bang in the wind and lose heat.

anybody know where i can find one? or is it possible to buy the vent as a seperate part, so i could choose whatever fan i want and then connect the vent to it.

If you're after a standard domestic fan, then the Vent Axia ones have a spring loaded back draught shutter which works.

I'd get a dehumidifier in their first. Will do a lot more than a fan would to control huminity

Vent Axia VA100 Series

when switched on the vent opens after 40 seconds, and closes when powered down

Theres also another make available but cant think of the make, its a circular design, ill edit post when i remember !

thanks for the replies guys, now i know where to find them.
this time i've decided to go for the cheap option, manrose XF100H from ebay, and a seperate spring loaded backdraft shutter and a vent cowl, as i've been told this will be good enough.
worth a try for £30, if it doesn't work and i can feel draughts getting in I will swap it for one with automatic shutters, but they seem to about 5 times the price so I'll be going for the cheap option first as i'm tight!

you can tell your an ex squaddie!! bloody drying rooms!! lol....

Ha! can't beat a good drying room. they are a basic necessity, where else am i going to dry my wet boots/jackets/gloves/waterproofs and wellies? there just isn'tenough radiators in the house, especially as my housemate works outside all year round too
