I am opening a sunbed salon in the midlands and heat is a massive problem. I am having rooms build to house the sunbeds but obviously the heat inside the room whilst the bed is on and for a while after it has turned off is great. The beds have 48 six foot tubes in and when they are on almost constantly for about 8 hours a day the heat output is considerable. Unfortunately there isn't enough height in the room to put in a ducting system. As each room is on an outside wall, I was thinking that an extractor fan would be the next best method of taking away the heat. Does anyone think that this is the best option and what would be the best fan to use be? The fans will be at a height where they can be touched by the client but children will not have access to them.

There's a lot of things to consider with extraction. Firstly there's always room for ducting and a ducted system will be far superior because you'll be able to easily adjust and balance the amount of air being extracted from each room. You can also use thermostatically controlled diffusers which will automatically adjust airflows. Secondly you need to consider where the replacement air(make-up or supply air) will be coming from. You can't extract air unless new air can get into the room to replace it.

Without seeing a drawing of the building it's impossible to make specific suggestions so I'd suggest you contact a local specialist to at least give you some advice before you go any further and waste time and money on a system that doesn't perform.

Ducting system is best and if designed correctly will also be able to have heat recovery install to heat via fresh air ducting to the other rooms that are not getting hot saving you money.

The problem is that there is only about 25cms ceiling height above the bed and I was told that there should be about that distance before the ducting bends to stop the air from flowing back into the bed. Don't know how true that is but that was what the guy told me that will install the bed. Do you know if this is correct because I originally thought it to be the best option. Thanks a lot for that.

Ducting bends can also be fitted with curved vanes plus you don't always use an actual formed bend under some circumstances you get better airflow with a tee where one side is blanked. There's always a way to duct a system, sometimes you've got to be flexible and adaptable and think creatively but believe me there's always a way. Like I say contact an experienced duct designer, by the sound of your system it will be very quick to design but there's lots of pitfalls to be avoided so it's worth paying a couple of hours of his time.

Also cobrauk's suggestion of exploring heat recovery is a good one, it's not big in Southern Africa where I am but again it could save you lots of money if it's designed correctly.
