Hi just wondered if the cables supplied by a TV manufacturer for the many TVs in our office block which have a half PVC shroud on the plug pins should have failed because of no earth? They were supplied with the TVs so we assumed they would pass ok. All the TVs are brand new, the PAT tester said they had no earths! Are these the correct leads?

If the TVs are class II (double insulated) then they don't need an earth. Look on the TV for a symbol that looks like a square inside another square. If you find it this means the TV is class II

Thanks, that means the guy failed all the leads and probably didn't check the TVs for double insulation, and made us change all the leads to ones with earths

Hi jaguar - seem to have got a bit tangled up in this thread somehow. Its a pity people keep referring to "kettle" leads and not IEC leads if that's what they mean. Most kettles these days are wired into their bases.

A picture of actual lead termination that started the thread would be most useful - then it could be determined if in fact there was an earth terminal and of course a corresponding socket in the tv.

I do come across 2 pin "IEC type" cords which are used with medical nebulisers - and these (nebulisers) as well as indicated as being double insulated have 2 pin "IEC type" sockets. And of course the 2 pin "IEC type" cords will not fit into an IEC socket (3 pin).
