Hi guys I just fitted a fan light in a bathroom. I read the instructions (which I can't find now) and I'm sure it said the light and the fan need to work together and shouldn't be separately wired. In other words the transformer was to be wired off the fan unit. It's one of those down-lights with a fan exhaust round it all in the same unit. The customer wants me to wire it so they can turn the fan off without turning the light in the middle off. There are four other down-lights that I put in which are independent of the fan. Anyone got any experience with these? I am fairly sure the instructions said not wire it the way I've been asked to. I can double check as I have another set of instructions at home but anyone know off the top of their heads? Ta.

No the unit works together in my experience. What I do is wire the fan/light combo unit off a separate pullcord.

Cant they live with using the four other downlights all the time, and just the fan/light unit when they shower?

I would tend to say that the manufacturers instructions override other considerations, it is possible that the light may overheat the fitting if the fan is not running (unlikely but possible). If the instructions say you must not wire them separately then that is what I would do.

Having said that if the wiring is accessible you could fit a switch on the fan part of the unit so that the fan can be switched off if required, but if that separate switch is not used then light and fan run together.

Failing that if they do not want a fan at the light replace it with a light unit only! Perhaps with a standard extract fan elsewhere!

the 12V light is fed via a tranny from the fan supply. the only way to do what they want is to fit a separate switch to turn the light on/off. edit: jusr re-read. they want to turn the fan off and have the light on? tell them NO!. these customers really get up your nose, wanting stupid arrangements. ask them if they want the fridge light to be on with the fridge turned off.

Love it!! You have a knack for taking what I'm thinking and wording it beautifully!
