FAO: Electricians who do only/a lot of testing work.

Basically I want to get into testing work a lot more in the next few months and for the near future. At the moment we get testing jobs here and there but not enough to do a long run of it. I was considering trying to look for testing work with the aim of cutting out installation in the long run and concentrating on PIR's etc.

Can anyone give me any help on the best ways to get this sort of work? I was basically thinking about getting yourself in with letting agents/estate agents etc. Also maybe going around a few businesses/office blocks and trying to get myself across to whoever is in charge of maintenance etc. Then maybe trying schools etc? (We recently carried out a test on a very large school in North London which was great work!)

So basically any pointers or advice would be great!

there are companys who specalise in testing a lot of them charge by the circuit approx£10 per circuit on commercial tha equates to around 10-15mins its getting like PAT testing more based on money than actuly looking for full proper tests ( with some companys not all) the customers are dictating prices

What mogga says is right. Most just want the cert and don't want to pay for it. Fine if your happy giving it a quick look and putting your name to it, but not me!!

i agree with tester steve. pir is not a job u want to be doing quickly or half heartedly. your the one in the fireing line when summin goes wrong

Guys I have no intention of doing shoddy half ***** tests! I am simply looking for advice on the best way to go about getting more involved in the area of testing. Or are you all basically saying I should forget it because of the cowboy testers out there?

Yep I think that's what they're saying. I find PIRs are good to break up the regular work, but there aren't many landlords out there who are willing to pay prices that make the work worth it. Getting the work from private landlords, if you can find a responsible one, tends to yeild a better return, as estate agents just want the cert and will give the work to the lowest bidder, which invariably will be a firm paying peanuts to monkeys for quick, shoddy work. 'Okay, well I'll just target private landlords' I hear you say. You try that, and tell me how far you get! You get a bit of work in the summer from people with student HMOs, but as there's no real legal requirement to get PIRs, most landlords simply do not get the work done.

Why do you just want to do testing, anyway? Booooooooring!
