A farmer I do some work for has just phoned me saying ever since I fitted that rcd thing his pressure washer won't work and trips the rcd, it's ok now though he says a bloke who rents a unit off him has took the earth wire off and it's running fine. Ahhhhhh

Yes,they seem to be in a world of their own with regard to electrics.I can think of one farm where an ordinary 3 phase head is just sticking out of the ground exposed to the wind and rain.No one seems bothered at all.

Lol I know a haulage yard similar , only it has a chipboard cover with no door on, the cover is now in classic condition.

Living in a village I do work for a few farmers and thief all the same, as long as it works and as for the wiring, all I try and do on every job is to make it safer than it was before I started. Here's a picture from another farm, extension lead wasn't working and plug had welded itself into the socket, when I finally got the plug out this is what I found. At least the fuse didn't blow

Was doing work on a farm a while back. The farmer asked me to have a look at a pendent in one of the barns, when we got to said light he turned it on. At which point it literelly sparked into life and also caught alight much to his amusement. All I could was stare in horror as he told me " it does that sometimes now can you fit us a new one" which I was only glad todo.

Corn feed bags now have a surcharge on them and have to go back to the supplier. Cost the farmer money to use one as protection.

Sorry to say that my inlaws run quite a fair size dairy farm down here, and its also a deathtrap. I try and dodge it now, family or not they just don't get it. In one 'office' there's an old ceramic rewireable 3ph board, right about where you'd grope for a lightswitch, no door, and 3 of the fuse carriers have crumbled so there's bits of BARE 2mm steel fencing wire bridging the bus/cct gap instead of protection.

most i've found are quite hard to work with , seem to be on completely different wavelengths and it's like :banghead:
although recently i've been working on a farm and the guy is now my favorite customer. anything i reccomend he just says get it done, and pays well. defo the minority though!

Lovely selection of threaded bar as fuse (M8 carrying more amps than 5/16 Whitworth...) Worked for them all my life,love em to bits but there is a reason farms are one of the two most dangerous workplaces... Was at a yard last week (a mates place) and got to see a reinactment of the last scene in Jaws 2 courtesy of his 3 PH flexible extension buzzing and crackling on the muddy floor. And as for "isolation",whether its electrical,mechanical,hydraulic or animal,they love a bit a "live-working",never letting the fact that what they are fixing is still actually trying to do what it does...Bless them

I think a lot of it is the older farmers,as some of you may remember I was doing a bit on a farm/grainstore recently well after the incident with the HSE the son who is early 40,s asked me to make some improvements,basically put right anything I thought was unsafe and set up an account with a local wholesaler for me to get anything I needed.His father who is in his late 70,s however objects to me spending a fiver to replace a damaged socket for example but is fine spending £50 on plants for his garden.In fact yesterday I went down as one of the control systems went tech and the plant was down,when along comes the old boy with an urgent job apparently he needed 2 12" holes cutting in a concrete floor for 2 bollards!Dont you love em?

I do a few jobs on farms, some deathtraps, some fairly good, you find some farms that supply the 'posh' supermarkets have to have inspections to satisfy the supermarkets 'welfare of the animals' .
On the other hand I do odd electrical jobs for another farmer and the whole place is wired in rubber cables, (other then the bits I ripped out and rewired) which are in suprisingly good condition considering they dated from 1959.
The farm is split phase and runs from a collection of MEM switchfuses as opposed to a fuseboard.
