Hi I am in my 3rd year at college and wondered if anyone has information on what will be in the 3rd year exams. I really just want to know the main types of faults and how these can be resolved.

Thanks
Wayne

you on about your practical in college or the am2?

in college they not that hard just try and keep a cool head i remember mine i made a few silly mistakes like forgetting to place the sign on the padlock

anyway your fualts will virtually be easy to find just go through your normal testing procedure example r1 and r2 you may come across an open circuit
insulation resistance you may come across a short and you will also have visual fualts that basically stand out like a sore thumb example you will have a cracked light fitting or the safety sign on the bonding missing

also remember the biggest reason for failing is not placing the key in your pocket after safe isolation

i have a fault finding exam tomoro! any hints and tips on what to look for and the basic types of faults they will give me?
thanks

Low IR, broken conductors, wrong polarity, wrongly wired motor controls (our fault-finding board was all dead testing). Some colleges liven it up, and would probably include a faulty RCD (ramp test) or a high Ze etc.

You have to find 9 faults. I had an incorrectly wired motor, 4 or 5 broken conductors (including a broken main bonding conductor), 2 or 3 low IR and reversed polarity on a pendant.

It's really nothing to worry about, just make sure you use the correct terminology.

Did my periodic and fault finding exam last week.

All faults will be found on normal dead testing routine. Mine included, missing fuse, switch line and neutral cross connected at lighting pendant, incorrectly polarity on a few socket circuits.

Apart from that there wasn't any that were difficult to pick up from what I heard from the rest of the lads.

I managed to pick up a dodgy tester though so made my day a nightmare. Had to re-test all my R1+R2, R1+RN

R1 end to end, R2 end to end and CPC end to end.

Managed to get a distinction though, best of luck.
