I recently failed my fault finding on my AM2 after passing everything else. I'm just wondering does anybody have any tips for fault finding as it isn't my best topic ?

What was the fault you failed on, or don't they give you any feedback?

Know what the circuit you are testing does and how it does it.
Know what type of result, level, units range, etc. you are expecting from a test so that you can tell if it is wrong.
Then the fault finding should be logical and clear cut.
Work through the system to narrow things down, but follow a plan so that you do not miss things.

From what I can remember these were the faults.

Low resistance reading on the Co2 detector
mcb trips when hot water turns on
there was a high end to end reading on the earth cable from the ring main
light switches aren't switching correctly( switch wires weren't belling out)(think I got that one
16a socket not working ( no continuity on l3 from ISO to socket )(think I got that one)

Cant remember the other two?

There looking for an understanding of how electrical circuit works. You need to describe your faults better aswell go into brief detail. I.e, wrong polarity, high resistance, broken conductors. Remember your faults can only be caused by switches so they are not going to be too difficult and its never faulty equipment in the AM2.

ring mains going to loose or poor connection causing the high resistance.
water heater is either going to be a L-E,L-N fault on the heater
Not too sure on co2 low is good!.

I can see it being easy to fail if you're unlucky enough to get a few of their bovine excrement rigged questions! I remember on my AM2 spending the first half of it on one fault! I remember it clearly to this day, and I didn't get it!

Fault was MCB trips when calling for hot water. Checked everything (or so I thought) and got nothing. I'm getting real agitated and I've called the assessor over because he was having me on for sure! He told me to leave while he checked the rig. When I came back he told me that I was wrong at that the fault was present. I still couldn't find it. I'm shouting and raging at this point because I was sure they were taking the pee! They were just laughing at me which made it even worse, if it wasn't for the fact that I was doing my AM2, which at the time meant a hell of a lot to me, I could happily have started throwing punches! In the end I gave up. I found the next bunch of faults within minutes no problem, handed over my sheet and left quick snap!

Anyway, after I left, the other fella who was on the same AM2 as me tells me outside that he was listening to the assessors discussing the fault while I had taken my little tantrum break. Turns out the fault was on the central heating valve!!! The one bit I didn't bother to check because it would be irrelevant right? WRONG!!! Of course it was relevant in the make believe world of the assessment center!!!

Sneaky effing barstewards!!!

I passed overall, but it taught me a valuable lesson. There will always be people who love to set you up to fail!

i had a fault on the heating. nothing electrically wrong. i checked every core and proved it inc manually operating the valves

i cant edit this post but i would like to add.

do all your tests and note what you did if you cant find the fault.

it wouldn't be the first time and you might pass if the reason it didnt appear was down to the examiner.

overall i thought i missed that fault but i didnt? it was a sneaky one.

the question was along the lines of "the client can't always get hot water when they want it"

that could be a bad connection or a sticking valve etc, i proved the electrical side and put probably faulty components and further investigation required.
i didnt get marked down for anything except the two mistakes on the multichoice test (i got some obscure questions)

when i got down to 30mins remaining i got bored and clicked finish as i was sure i had checked all the answers bar thouse two

I would add though that a typical good TT rod of 100 ohms only needs 3V to have 30mA flowing and so trip an RCD, you might find that sort of N-E...
