I

I Don't Know

Hey all,

Im having to do some fault finding on a final circuit soon, there are many i have to do, but there are a few i don't fully understand...

It would be greatly appreciated if someone could maybe describe the following faults and how exactly you locate them on a final circuit...

- An earth fault
- Reverse polarity on a section of M.I cable
- Open circuit in the neutral conductor
- High resistance on continuity test L - L

Thanks

is this for an exam on a test rig mate or is it for a property. sounds like a rig set of faults to me. check out some of amberleafs posts i am sure there is some fault finding in there. let me know if you need any more advise

"Earth fault" can mean a couple of things
Live or neutral to earth fault
Open circuit earthing conductor
High impedence earth path
Lack of continuity of cpc in a ring
Lack of continuity of cpc in aradial circyuit

example of just one
Low insulation resistance to earth of a live conductor

Remove any loads
Using an insulation resistance tester, connect the leads between live + earth, apply 500 volt and hope to get a high reading, millions of ohms
Do the same between neutral and earth and expect the same

If one or other of the tests is very low, disect the circuit to narrow down and identify the section where the fault shows

Thanks very much for your help chaps. It turned out to be reversed polarity and some dodgy DIY stuff. I'll go back another day to sort it...

Only the N side of the lamp would be at 0v if you went further along the element the voltage would rise.
