Has anyone seen a faulty rcd. With the trip switch still working. ? Or is this impossible.

the test button is only for the mechanical function of the rcd;
the rcd tester will establish the trip times of the rcd and ensure it does not trip on half x and trips within the times on 1 and 5x

The test switch is just a short link with a resistor in line, creating the imbalance. In theory the sensor coil and both other coils will be tested. However the sensitivity of the device cannot be determined (has to be between 50% and 100% rated current).
