do we have to install fcu above worktops for washing machines etc on new builds if the client has requested that they don't want them.
Is it just good practice, I can't find anything in the wiring regs but I am aware of it in electricians guide to part p, but is this just a guide or is it compulsory to install them regardless?

no, never seen it, It is compulsory for socket outlets to have switches or to be switched from another point, how you interpet that is another matter
